The Safe Spaces initiative was successfully implemented across 10 public secondary schools in Abuja as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. The project recorded strong participation from students, teachers, and school administrators, with high levels of engagement across all planned activities.
Through the intervention, more than 1,000 students were educated on the types, risks, and reporting pathways for gender-based violence, directly contributing to SDG 5 – Gender Equality. Participants demonstrated improved awareness, confidence, and willingness to speak up and seek support in cases of abuse.
In addition, the project trained and equipped 20 teachers and counselors as GBV responders and Safe Spaces champions, strengthening school-based safeguarding systems and aligning with ISH: Inclusion, Health & Wellbeing objectives.

To amplify youth voices, digital training sessions were delivered to student groups, encouraging the safe and responsible use of technology for advocacy and awareness creation. The project also established Safe Spaces Clubs in participating schools, ensuring peer-led continuity, student-driven advocacy, and long-term sustainability beyond the project duration.

Creative advocacy was further promoted through GBV-themed murals and paint projects, providing visible, lasting reminders of the importance of safety, respect, and inclusion within school environments.
Overall, the Safe Spaces initiative met its objectives and demonstrated an effective, collaborative, and scalable model for promoting safe, inclusive, and GBV-free learning environments in Abuja’s public secondary schools.
